The first piano trio was composed in 1854 and revised long afterwards (published in 1891), with all traces of Beethoven erased. The second and third piano trios recorded here were composed in 1880-82 and 1886, respectively, and clearly show that Brahms had already reached full maturity and established his own voice before the revision of No. 1.
