A smart 19th century Anglo-Indian ebonised desk armchair of 'Klismos' form. Probably Ceylon, circa 1850–1890.
An unusually elegant example of this very rare model, following regency 'Grecian' chair designs, raised on gently splayed legs that are typical of the 'Klismos' form, that was often depicted on Ancient Greek vases as a symbol of status. Suitably blackened to simulate the exotic ebony and also alluding to the ancient pottery vessels, this chair has a most unusual circular plan, and a handsome wraparound backrest, typical of Regency designs. The seat is now covered in John Boyd Textiles horsetail fabric, traditionally hand-loomed in Somerset, England, since 1837, and is finished with patinated bronze studs.
With its unusual and sleek outline, this chair is perfect for a classic interior as well as for a fresh modern look.
