This historic stamp originates from the Gold Coast, shortly before it became the independent nation of Ghana. The original issue depicts Lake Bosumtwi with Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait, valued at 4 pence (4d). Following Ghana’s independence on 6th March 1957, existing colonial stocks were overprinted with the bold inscription “GHANA INDEPENDENCE 6TH MARCH, 1957”. Such overprints marked the transition from colonial to national identity, making them highly prized among collectors. These stamps represent one of the earliest philatelic commemorations of Ghana’s sovereignty.
