A very fine rare pair of George III Adam period carved giltwood wall brackets of large proportions, modelled in the Neoclassical taste as the Prince of Wales's ostrich feather plumes.
England, c. 1770
Of demi-lune form, with a molded upper edge over a fluted frieze, supported by Prince-of-Wales feathers above a plumed acanthus foliage, with tapering bellflowers below, decorated in burnished gold leaf.
Similar bracket designs are illustrated in A. Hepplewhite and Co., The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, London, 1788-1794, pls. 90-91.
A pair of brackets of related design was sold Christie's London, 30 November 2000, lot 132 (£10,575).
