The author: Hans Christian Andersen often referred to in Scandinavia as H. C. Andersen (2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875), was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays, travelogues, novels, and poems, Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children: his stories express themes that transcend age and nationality.
The Illustrator: Evelyn Stuart Hardy (1865-1935) was a British illustrator and author. She was born in Clifton, Bristol, to an artistic family, both her father David Hardy and his wife Emily, being artists. Her elder brothers David (better known as Paul Hardy, 1862-1942) and Norman Heywood Hardy (1863-1914) also became artists. She was born Beatrice Evelyn Elizabeth Hardy in 1865 and died in 1935. She was never married.
