Arcadia String Quartet Vol. 2! Weinberg's string quartet collection begins! The exciting Romanian quartet Arcadia String Quartet presents a collection of string quartets by Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919-1996)! They are ardent supporters of Weinberg's quartets, "Weinberg's music is like a gleam of light surrounded by the darkness of the unknown, and it became our goal to diminish its shadow." He said. Weinberg's creation of 17 string quartets, spanning nearly half a century from his student days in Warsaw to the end of his career in Moscow, demonstrates his development as a composer more clearly than any other genre. No. 2, composed in 1939-40 while studying in Minsk, is dedicated to the composer's mother and sister. (His mother and sister had already lost their lives during the German invasion of Poland, but Weinberg did not learn of this until later.) Composed in 1945, No. 5 was the first quartet to give each movement a title, and was influenced by his close friend Shostakovich.No. 8 is a single movement work dedicated to the Borodin Quartet. The Arcadia String Quartet was founded in 2006 by students of the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Romania, and has won the 2009 Hamburg International Chamber Music Competition, the 2011 Almere International Chamber Music Competition, the 2012 Wigmore Hall London International String Quartet Competition, and the Winner of the 2014 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, the quartet is one of the most exciting string quartets of its generation.
